To retrieve pictures from symbolic image databases, we need to discrim
inate the similarity among pictures. To provide sufficient information
for discrimination among pictures, a good data structure is necessary
to identify objects and to specify the spatial relationships among ob
jects in a picture. In this paper, we propose the bin-tree oriented st
ructure as a new representation for manipulating spatial relationships
among objects. Algorithms are also devised for retrieving symbolic pi
ctures. Compared with 2D-strings in time and storage complexities, we
find that our scheme is indeed feasible.
