The thermal stability of a nanocrystalline (NC) Hf11Ni89 alloy was stu
died using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, resist
ivity measurements and magnetothermal analysis. Microstructure and com
position evolution in the grain boundaries and nanograins prior to evi
dent grain growth was detected, and it was shown that this evolution m
ay have a significant influence on the electrical resistivity and magn
etic properties of the sample. Our findings demonstrated that the ther
mal stability of properties of NC materials is not necessarily equival
ent to the grain-size stability of the same materials.
