S. Renesto et A. Paganoni, A PHYTOSAUR SKULL FROM THE NORIAN (LATE TRIASSIC) OF LOMBARDY (NORTHERN ITALY), Rivista italiana di paleontologia e stratigrafia (Testo stampato), 104(1), 1998, pp. 115-121
An isolated phytosaur skull found in the Calcare di Zorzino (Norian, L
ate Triassic), near the locality of Endenna (Bergamo Prealps, Lombardy
, Northern Italy), is described. The skull lacks the mandible and is s
everely compressed and distorted in its posterior portion. Nevertheles
s it is possible to ascribe it to the genus Mystriosuchus, likely to M
ystriosuchus planirostris, already known on the basis of excellent spe
cimens from the Stubensandstein Formation in Germany. This finding rep
resents one of the rare large reptile specimens found in the Norian fo
ssil-bearing localities of Lombardy, along with a new phytosaur yet to
be prepared and a nearly two meters long specimen of the placodont Ps
ephoderma alpinum.
