An extended resonance technique for designing power amplifiers is inve
stigated. This technique provides a planar power-combining structure w
hose primary distinction from conventional structures is that it does
not require quarter-wave or multiple quarter-wave spacing between devi
ces. A theoretical analysis of extended-resonance combiners is present
ed, followed by experimental data from an eight-device power amplifier
. This approach is adaptable to monolithic circuit-fabrication techniq
ues and should be useful for millimeter-wave applications.
