EXCITED-STATE ELECTRON-TRANSFER IN NAPHTHYL-2,2'-DIYL-PHOSPHATO-PENTAAMINECOBALT(III)

The phosphate ester 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl-phosphate shows an inten se fluorescence of the binaphthyl moiety. Ln the complex phthyl-2,2'-d iyl-phosphato-pentaammine-cobalt(III) this emission is quenched by exc ited state electron transfer to Co(III). As a consequence the phosphat e ester undergoes an oxidative cleavage while Co(IU) is reduced to Co( II) with phi=0.023+/-0.002 at lambda(in)=313 nm.
