M. Streat et La. Sweetland, REMOVAL OF PESTICIDES FROM WATER USING HYPERCROSSLINKED POLYMER PHASES - PART-2 - SORPTION STUDIES, Process safety and environmental protection, 76(B2), 1998, pp. 127-134
The adsorption of simazine, chlorotoluron, isoproturon, atrazine and d
iuron from water has been studied using a range of Hypersol-Macronet(T
M) polymers. Batch equilibrations have been performed in single compon
ent and multicomponent mixtures of trace pesticides in the mu gl(-1) (
ppb) concentration range. Selectivity of pesticides is observed and ex
plained in relation to the binding mechanisms which involve hydrophobi
c interactions and hydrogen bonding. Isotherms are fitted by the Freun
dlich expression and the parameters are used to compare sorption with
published information on commercially available activated carbons. The
atrazine capacity of Hypersol-Macronet(TM) polymer MN-200 is less tha
n Chemviron F-400 at an equilibrium concentration of 0.01 mu moll(-1)
but the binding energy of pesticides is significantly lower on the pol
ymer phases.
