This study of the progression of eye pathology in 100 nursing home res
idents found that the amount of eye pathology (cataracts, macular dege
neration, and glaucoma) was high and increased from Time 1 to Time 2 (
mean interval = 315 days) and that the increases in cataracts and macu
lar degeneration were statistically significant. Also, the residents'
best-corrected visual acuity dropped significantly from Time 1 to Time
2. These longitudinal data indicate the importance of routine assessm
ents to detect changes in the vision of elderly residents.
