BACKGROUND: Solid papillary carcinoma of the breast was recently descr
ibed. This tumor displays distinctive clinical and morphologic feature
s. It is an intraductal papillary carcinoma frequently associated with
mucinous carcinoma and infiltrating ductal carcinoma not otherwise sp
ecified. CASE: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of a solid papil
lary carcinoma of the right breast in an 82-year-old female, demonstra
ted a cellular specimen of dis-cohesive, small, uniform and ovoid tumo
r cells, with occasional loose clusters. The cytoplasm was abundant an
d finely granular. The nuclei were round, without marked atypia. The n
ucleoli were inconspicuous. Scant mucinous material was present. The d
iagnosis was confirmed histologically and immunohistochemically. CONCL
USION: The cytologic aspects of solid papillary carcinoma of the breas
t suggest It carcinoma with endocrine differentiation and a weak mucin
ous component.
