During the last decade, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) has rec
eived much attention both from researchers and practitioners. One of t
he reasons for this is the role of CAPP in reducing throughput time an
d improving quality. An attempt has been made in this paper to review
the existing literature with the objective of gaining insights into th
e design and implementation of CAPP systems. The literature available
(1989-1996) on CAPP has been reviewed based on the types of systems. T
he advantages and disadvantages of such systems are presented. Finally
, future research directions are indicated.
