When linear di-, tri-, or tetraphosphate was degraded in the presence
of Al3+, in addition to the usual degradation products, phosphates for
med which possessed one more PO4 group than the parent phosphates. Thi
s was confirmed by using HPLC. Tetraphosphate produced from the hydrol
ysis of triphosphate in the presence of Al3+ was isolated with the use
of an anion-exchange column, and its structure was ascertained by P-3
1-NMR measurement. Moreover, linear tetra-, penta- and hexaphosphates
resulted from the six-membered cyclo-triphosphate in the presence of A
l3+ ions. The yield of the unusual hydrolysis products of the phosphat
es became maximum when an equimolar amount of Al3+ ion was used. (C) 1
