Abstract
The past few years have witnessed remarkable continuing progress in ou r understanding of the pathogenesis of nicotine dependence and withdra wal and the ability to treat these disorders. In particular, a better understanding of populations at special risk, the advent of effective over-the-counter medications and the recent approval of several new me dications has greatly increased the ability of health professionals to rationally diagnose and effectively treat their tobacco-using patient s.
