The conventional treatment for arrest of protracted active phase dilat
ation is amniotomy and oxitocin. This kind of labor dystocia is associ
ated with an increased incidence in Cesarean delivery. We describe the
use of cervical balloon after amniotomy for protracted active phase d
ilatation. We have used this approach in five parturients. All five pa
tients had a spontaneous vaginal delivery. Intrapartum cervical balloo
n in patients with dysfunctional labor may reduce the need for Cesarea
n delivery.
