Pj. Puxley et Pwjl. Brand, DUST EXTINCTION IN STARBURST GALAXIES - NGC1614 AND 7714, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 266(2), 1994, pp. 431-440
We present high signal-to-noise ratio observations of the near-infared
hydrogen recombination lines Pa beta, Br gamma and Br alpha in the ga
laxies NGC 1614 and 7714. The data are used in conjunction with existi
ng optical line fluxes to examine the dust extinction towards the star
-forming nuclei of these galaxies. In the case of NGC 1614, at least,
the conventional model of a foreground absorbing screen is found to be
incorrect, resulting in an underestimate of the true extinction.
