P. Schiessl et al., Durability-based design, monitoring, and repair of reinforced concrete structures: A review, AR J SCI EN, 23(2C), 1998, pp. 207-227
Corrosion of reinforcement, due to severe micro-environments and/or poor co
ncrete quality, has caused serious damage to concrete structures. To avoid
future damage and repeated damage after repair, new approaches to durabilit
y design, monitoring, and repair of concrete structures, based on the mecha
nisms governing the deterioration processes, are presented. Like the proced
ure for load design, design for durability should be performance-based, tak
ing into account the probabilistic nature of the processes and material pro
perties involved. Testing of the durability-related quality parameters and
monitoring the structures during use must be integral parts of the design a
nd maintenance procedures for concrete structures.
