Two new Schiff-base compounds, as potential ligands, 3, 3'-dimethyl-4, 4'-d
i (acetylacetonylideneimino) biphenyl C-19 H-22 N2O3 (I) and 3, 3'-dimethyl
-4-acetylacetonylideneimino-4'- aminobiphenyl C-24 H-22 N2O4 (2), were synt
hesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV and H-1 NMR spectra
. The crystal structure of 1 has been determined by X-ray diffraction techn
ique. The crystal is monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 14. 871(3),
b = 7. 290(1), c = 16. 787(3) Angstrom , beta = 106. 97(3)degrees, V = 1741
(1) Angstrom(3), D-x = 1. 246 g/cm(3), Z = 4, M-r = 326. 40, lambda = 0. 71
073 Angstrom, mu(MoK alpha) = 0. 792 cm(-1), F(000) = 696. The final refine
ment is converged with R = 0. 051 and R-w = 0. 058 for 1615 observed reflec
tions [I greater than or equal to 3 sigma(I)]. The result of structure anal
ysis indicates that atoms N(1), O(2) and O(3) are included in a conjugate s
ystem.
