Effort was made in this paper to formulate a parameter estimation technolog
y by systematically combining the field measurements and the prior informat
ion of underground structure. The Extended Bayesian Method (EBM) was adopte
d for the feedback analysis and the finite element analysis, which was impl
emented to predict the ground response. Determined in the present study wer
e various geotechnical parameters including the elastic modulus (E), the in
itial horizontal stress coefficient at rest (K-0), the cohesion (c) and the
internal friction angle (phi). The validity of the feedback system propose
d herein was demonstrated through an elastoplastic example problem. The pro
posed method was applied to an actual tunnel site in Pusan, Korea and has s
hown to be highly effective in actual held problems. (C) 1999 Elsevier Scie
