Abstract
Genetic algorithm has been used to solve the problem of capacitor placement in power distribution, systems. A new composition of the genetic string ha s been proposed for the coding of the capacitor placement problem. The prop osed genetic string represents both the optimum location and the size of th e capacitor. A number of modifications have also been proposed to improve t he performance of the simple genetic algorithm in solving the capacitor pla cement problem. Test results have been presented in support of the superior ity of the proposed modifications.
