Standard measures of psychomotor speed and central nervous system arousal w
ere used to assess the behavioural toxicity of several antianxiety and anti
depressant agents. The results indicate that, for the agents evaluated, the
re is a wide variation in the effects on cognitive function. As pharmacoeco
nomic factors become increasingly important, the cost of accidents due to t
he behavioural toxicity of these drugs must be taken into account when dete
rmining the true treatment costs. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
