The attachment of pendent olefin groups to oxygen-ligated zirconium complex
es using olefin-substituted phenols and alcohols and readily accessible zir
conium reagents is described. Syntheses of three crystallographically chara
cterizable complexes isolable in 55-90% yield are reported. Eugenol, HOC6H3
(OMe-2)(CH2CH=CH2-4) (HOAr) reacts with [Zr((OPr)-Pr-i)(4)((HOPr)-Pr-i)](2)
in toluene to form [((PrO)-Pr-i)(2)(ArO)Zr(mu-(OPr)-Pr-i)](2), 1. CH2=CHCH
2OH reacts with [Zr(NMe2)(4)](2) in the presence of 2,6-dimethylphenol to f
orm the mixed ligand salt, {Me2NH2}{[(2,6-Me2C6H3O)(3)Zr](2)(mu-OCH2CH=CH2)
(3)}, 2. The potassium salt derived from eugenol, KOAr, reacts with "Zr(OEt
)(4)" in THF to form [K2Zr(OAr)(4)(OEt)](2)(O), 3.
