The potential of photochemistry for the synthesis of organometallic molecul ar squares is illustrated by the preparation of the novel complexes [{(Co)( 4)Cr(4,4'-bipy)Re(CO)(3)Cl(4,3'-bipy)}(2)] and [ {(CO)(4)Mo(4,4'-bipy)Re(CO )(3)Cl(4,4'-bipy)}(2)].
