This paper addresses the design and implementation of sliding mode controll
ers with different structures for the idle speed control of an automotive e
ngine. A non-linear controller design based on sliding mode theory is devel
oped. Different strategies for the idle speed controller design are present
ed and they are compared through non-linear simulations. Finally, the contr
ollers are evaluated on a test rig and conclusions are drawn. Copyright (C)
