Polymers derived from the isomeric C2N2 monomers cyanogen (NCCN) and i
socyanogen (CNCN) are investigated. Although both paracyanogen [poly(N
CCN)] and paraisocyanogen [poly(CNCN)] consist of carbon and nitrogen
in a close to 1 : 1 ratio, thermogravimetric (TG) and spectroscopic an
alyses (DRIFT, EPR, UV-VIS-NIR and XPS) reveal that their molecular st
ructures are markedly different. Despite the occurrence of pi-conjugat
ion, no regular ladder structures are found. In line with the spectros
copic data, conductivity measurements show that pristine poly(CNCN) an
d poly(NCCN) are an insulator and a semiconductor, respectively.
