A novel technique for increasing the main lobe level and reducing the side
lobes of monopoles, aperture and reflector antennas over ground planes is p
roposed. The technique employs a compensating loop which is physically clos
e and parallel to each diffracting edge, and is arranged to have the revers
e current distribution of the edge. It is anticipated that with proper opti
mization of the various design parameters, the improvement in the main to f
irst side lobe ratio will exceed the recently observed experimental value o
f about 7 dB.
