Poly (6-substituted 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithioxylylene)s were obtained in go
od yield with high molecular weight by the polycondensation of 6-substitute
d 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiols with m- and p-xylylene dibromides in the pres
ence of a cetyl trimethyl quaternary ammonium salt (10 similar to 50 mol%)
at 50 similar to 90 degrees C for 24 h. The polymer had high transparency a
nd no absorption to light between 300 and 800 nm wavelength. Glass transiti
on and melting temperatures of the polymers indicated that a polymer withou
t double refraction was obtained by the selection of substituents. Since th
e polymers contain triazine rings and sulfur atoms with high electron densi
ty, they had high refraction indexes. These polymers will have good process
ing properties because they were soluble in ether-type solvents and there w
as a great difference between melting and decomposition temperatures.
