Materials in the (Tl, Pb)Sr2CaCu2O7-delta system have been synthesised
with different oxygen stoichiometries and their structure and superco
nducting properties studied. Powder neutron-diffraction studies reveal
that for delta > 0 vacancies exist in the thallium-oxygen layer leadi
ng to an increase in the c lattice parameter, apical copper-oxygen bon
d and the inter-cuprate layer distance. These structural changes are d
iscussed in relation to the superconducting properties and comparisons
drawn to the double-thallium layer materials.
