Abstract
Proenkephalin (Penk) gene structure in hamsters and humans are similar but they differ from rats. Ln this study hamster Penk gene expression was exami ned after hypophysectomy +/- glucocorticoid receptor blockade with RU 486 ( mifepristone). Zn contrast to rats, basal Penk gene expression in hamster a drenals did not change after treatments that reduced both the influence fro m glucocorticoids and phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase mRNA levels. M eanwhile, striatal preproenkephalin mRNA levels increased under these condi tions. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
