Neodymium doped berate and phosphate glass specimens have been prepared by
the melt quenching technique. Their absorption spectra have been recorded i
n the region 300-1000 nm. The Judd-Ofelt theory has been applied to the mea
sured values of absorption line strengths to evaluate the spontaneous emiss
ion probabilities from the F-4(3/2) level, quantum efficiencies and stimula
ted emission cross sections of the F-4(3/2) --> I-4(11/2) transition for Nd
3+. The values of emission cross sections are comparable with those shown b
y glasses used in solid state laser applications. (C) 1999 Published by Els
