Abstract
Using a femtosecond pump-probe technique, we show that the fundamental mech anical radial mode of metal nanoparticles can be coherently excited and pro bed via its coupling with the electrons. The results permit determination o f the frequency and damping of this mode as a function of the nanoparticle radius. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
