Abstract
irreversible heat generation for a standard anelastic solid subject to a ti me dependent strain is calculated using a thermodynamical model based on in ternal variables. This model can be applied to predict the instantaneous di ssipation in glasses at low temperatures subject to a known strain or stres s as a function of time. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
