The decay time tau of longitudinal phonons propagating along the [001] axis
in a single crystal of paratellurite (TeO2) is found to vary with the freq
uency and the temperature as 1/tau = w(a)T(b) with a = 1.84 +/- 0.20 and b
= 2.81 +/- 0.20 below about 53 K. and as omega(a)T with a = 1.87 +/- 0.20 a
bove this temperature. These results confirm Herring's theory for anharmoni
c phonon decay in anisotropic crystals. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All
