A variational approach is presented for calculating the ground-state e
nergy of two-and three-dimensional polarons in symmetric quantum dots
with arbitrary electron-phonon coupling constants. It is found that th
e polaronic energy correction increases with the decrease in size of t
he quantum dot and is much more pronounced with decreasing dimensional
ity. Furthermore, the relative polaronic enhancement is found to be in
sensitive to the variation of the dimensionality and the coupling cons
tant at weak coupling, however, as the coupling constant increases, it
comes to depend on not only the dimensionality, but the coupling cons
tant as well. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
