A descriptive study with the inactivated M. hyopneumoniae vaccine Stel
lamune(R) Mycoplasma front Pfizer Inc. was conducted in two pig heads
of the Federal Hybrid Breeding Programme with chronic respiratory dise
ases in young boars and gilts. A high seroprevalence of M. hyopneumoni
ae-, PRRS-, A. pleuropneumoniae- and influenza-infections was detected
prior to,vaccination. Typical clinical symptoms of PRRS were observed
in herd A. Pleuritis was found in selected pigs of herd B at slaughte
r. In these conditions the following results were found in vaccinated
animals: increase of daily weight gain by up to 66.4 g (herd A), reduc
tion of the frequency and severity of pneumonia in selected animals by
up to 48.5% (herd B) and 72,2% (herd A) respectively as well as consi
derable savings of medicaments. All indirect influence of the mycoplas
ma vaccination on PRRS, A. pleuropneumoniae and influenza infections i
s discussed.
