In this paper I discuss some of the shortcomings of today's marine sci
ence in response to a recently published paper by Ann Gargett (1997: F
ish. Oceanogr. 6:109-117). Three problem areas have been identified in
the field linking climate forcing and fish production: (1), the yet-t
o-be established observational proof for a relationship between the tw
o; (2), the strongly neglected biology of organisms at evolutionary an
d ecological time scales; and (3), the disregard for spatial and tempo
ral scales in the discussion of mechanisms and supporting data.
