S. Schmidttroschke et al., ANOREXIA-NERVOSA MAY BE COMPLICATED BY GA STROINTESTINAL DISORDERS ENFORCING A CHANGE IN FURTHER MANAGEMENT, Monatsschrift fur Kinderheilkunde, 146(5), 1998, pp. 481-483
Case presentation: An 11 4/12 year old girl with anorexia nervosa deve
loped recurrent vomiting. There were only little bowel sounds to be he
ard. She had hypochloremic alcalosis. Radiologically we found a stomac
h full of fluid and air. With the patient in supine position the upper
GI series showed an obstruction at the junction of the second and thi
rd portion of the duodenum. In the prone position passage of contrast
medium was unimpaired. Under treatment with cisapride passage remained
unimpaired. Discussion: Anorectic patients suffering from recurrent v
omiting may suffer from reversible duodenal stenosis. Local dysmotilit
y and/or arteria mesenterica superior syndrome may be possible causes.
Early diagnosis may eventually save patients from surgical interventi
on.
