Hc. Steinhausen et al., CORRELATES OF PSYCHOPATHOLOGY AND INTELLIGENCE IN CHILDREN WITH FETALALCOHOL SYNDROME, Journal of child psychology and psychiatry and allied disciplines, 35(2), 1994, pp. 323-331
After documenting the wide range of psychopathology and impairment of
intellectual functioning in earlier contributions, the present report
from long-term observations of an extended cohort of children with Fet
al Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) deals with correlates of psychopathology and
intelligence in these children. At preschool age, severity of morphol
ogical damage, the type of milieu, sex and IQ were significant predict
ors of psychopathology. In another subgroup of school-aged children, t
hese associations were less strong; only severity of morphological dam
age and IQ still correlated to some extent significantly with psychopa
thology. Intelligence was significantly impaired in those children wit
h severe morphological damage who were raised in institutions.
