We report that treatment of the sodium salt of p-cresol with sulfanyla
cetic or 3-sulfanylpropanoic acid and formaldehyde gave 2,6-bis(carbox
yalkylsulfanylmethyl)-4-methylphenol (H(3)L and H(3)L'), which gave di
fferent complexes upon reaction with lanthanide salts or organotin com
pounds.
