Kb. Barinov et Yb. Gladenkov, SUBDIVISION OF OLIGOCENE AND LOWER MIOCENE SEDIMENTS OF NORTHERN SAKHALIN EVIDENCED BY MOLLUSKS, Stratigraphy and geological correlation, 6(3), 1998, pp. 280-292
Upper Eocene, Oligocene, and lower Miocene units were distinguished in
the Lower Cenozoic Machigar and Tumi formations of the Schmidt Penins
ula, northern Sakhalin, using distribution patterns of 77 mollusk spec
ies. A detailed study of their assemblages permitted far the first tim
e the subdivision of the section into nine faunal beds. The results ar
e used to correlate the section with coeval deposits in adjacent regio
ns and to perform paleogeographical reconstructions.
