M. Anguita et al., ETIOPATHOGENESIS OF INFECTIVE ENDOCARDITI S - UNDERLYING LESIONS AND ETIOLOGIC MICROORGANISMS, Revista espanola de cardiologia, 51, 1998, pp. 11-15
Infective endocarditis is caused by the infection of an amorfous mass
of platelets and fibrin (the so-called nonbacterial thrombotic endocar
ditis) which involves a damaged endotelial surface of the heart. Sever
al pathogenetic mechanisms (hemodynamic, immunological, microbiologica
l, etc.) are needed for the development of endocarditis. We review som
e of these mechanisms, as well as possible changes in etiopathogenesis
of this disease that have recently occurred.
