Abstract
Three strains of encapsulated Enterococcus faecalis, which produced hi ghly mucoid coalescing colonies on routine bacteriologic media, were i solated from urine specimens of patients with urinary tract infection. Encapsulation could be demonstrated through India ink preparations. T he occurrence of this unusual enterococcal colony morphotype, which re sembles that of a Gram-negative bacterium, may delay true identificati on. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.
