M. Mattos et al., AMERICAN CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS ASSOCIATED WITH HIV-INFECTION - REPORT OF 4 CASES, JEADV. Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, 10(3), 1998, pp. 218-225
Objective A report of four cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis a
ssociated with HIV infection is presented. Background The association
of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis and HIV infection is rare. Only 15 case
s have been reported in the literature thus far. Subjects Four new cas
es are described and the differences between the clinical presentation
in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients an emphasized.Concl
usions Multiple cutaneous lesions plus mucosal involvement characteriz
e the clinical presentation of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in ass
ociation with HIV infection in the majority of the cases. A serologica
l investigation for HIV infection is recommended for patients presenti
ng with this type of clinical picture, especially if the patient is a
young male. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
