Abstract
The first measurements in any system of the effects of multi-step anne aling treatments on the composition/time-dependent nucleation rates ar e presented for Na2O . 2CaO . 3SiO(2) glasses made near the stoichiome tric composition. The experimental results compare well with the time- dependent behavior predicted from the classical theory of nucleation, though small systematic differences suggest possible deviations from t he kinetic model. These studies support an earlier claim that the comp osition dependence of nucleation in this glass is dominated by changes in the crystal-glass interfacial energy. (C) 1998 Acta Metallurgica I nc.
