As a part of an international experimental field campaign, the associa
tion of air pollution with sea breeze circulation in the Greater Athen
s Area (GAA) is discussed on the basis of the behaviour of ozone and p
eroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN). During typical sea breeze days inside the A
thens basin the ozone levels reach values up to 66% greater than value
s outside the basin. There is also an increase in ozone and PAN mixing
ratios from the south to the north and from lower to higher locations
, within the GAA. On-line PAN-measurements with a time resolution of 5
min at three sites located almost along a straight line across the At
hens basin ranging From the island of Aegina in the Gulf of Saronikos
to the northern border of the GAA show distinct peaks due to the pollu
tion cloud NEPHOS. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
