Abstract
The magnetic moments of the octet baryons are calculated in a chiral s ymmetric independent quark potential model of the form V-q(r) = (1 + g amma degrees)[a ln (r/b)]. The residual interaction arising from the q uark-pion coupling over and above the dominant confining one represent ed by this phenomenological potential, is treated as a low order pertu rbation. The correction due to center of mass motion is also taken int o account appropriately. The results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.
