Abstract
This paper discusses the results tin terms of costs, reuse of sand and reduction of disposal volume) of a modelling study on various disposa l and sand separation scenario's. The model is based on the following input data: (i) the quantity of annually dredged sediments divided ove r four types of sediment; (ii) the physical composition of these four types of sediment; (iii) the costs for wet disposal and sand separatio n. Based on the input data of the model, the SCG concludes that sand s eparation is an environmentally and economically attractive alternativ e for disposal. The costs for sand separation are in the same range as the costs for disposal, even at relatively low disposal costs (10-20 US $ per m(3) ex-situ). Therefore large savings on both disposal volum e and primary sand seems achievable. (C) 1998 IAWQ. Published by Elsev ier Science Ltd.
