We consider dynamical and quasi-static thermoelastic contact problems
in R-n modeling the evolution of temperature and displacement in an el
astic body that may come into contact with a rigid foundation. The exi
stence of solutions to these dynamical and quasi-static nonlinear prob
lems and the exponential stability are investigated using a penalty me
thod. Interior smoothing effects in the quasi-static case are also dis
cussed.
