Abstract
The electronic polarizability of even polyenes containing from 10 to 4 0 carbon atoms was evaluated, by means of the SOS procedure within the PPP-SDCI approximation, for the ground and first excited singlet and triplet states. It was shown that, in a range of chain length dependin g on the degree of alternance of the bonds, the variation of polarizab ility for the first two pipi excited singlets displays opposite extre ma, induced by electron correlation and polyene relaxation effects.
