Zirconia whiskers 100-500 mum long and 0.1-5 mum in diameter were obta
ined by chemical vapour deposition from a ZrCl4-CO2-H2-Ar mixture, at
a temperature of about 900-degrees-C and under total atmospheric press
ure, in the presence of palladium. The method used, the morphology and
the microanalysis of the whiskers are described, and some aspects of
the growth mechanism are introduced here.
