The initiating efficiency of some cobalt, aluminium and ferric salts f
or the polymerization of 2-methylpropene in hexane is evaluated by the
determination of the polymerization yield. Whereas cobalt salts are i
nactive, the initiating capability of ferric perchlorate is good. Anhy
drous ferric perchlorate was prepared, and under anhydrous conditions
its initiating efficiency is similar to that of the dihydrate. These r
esults show that cationic polymerization of olefins can be induced, wi
th notable activity, by heterogeneous initiators in apolar media, usin
g salts other than aluminium trichloride.
