We argue that strong final state rescattering among the secondary part
icles created in relativistic heavy ion collisions is essential to und
erstand the measured Bose-Einstein correlations. The recently suggeste
d ''random walk models'' which contain only initial state scattering a
re unable to reproduce the measured magnitude and K-perpendicular to-d
ependence of R-perpendicular to in Pb + Pb collisions and the increase
of R-l with increasing size of the collision system. (C) 1998 Elsevie
