The atomic structure of a symmetric 24 degrees[001] tilt grain boundar
y in MgO has been derived directly from high-resolution Z-contrast ima
ges obtained in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The image
s indicate the presence of impurities (Z>12) and vacancies at the boun
dary. High spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy has be
en used to determine that the segregated impurity is Ca. The specific
sites occupied by Ca are obtained from the image and bond valence sum
analysis.
